Judicial Watch Statement regarding Nomination of Harriett Miers

(Washington, DC) – Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton offered the following statement today regarding President Bush’s nomination of Harriet Miers to the United States Supreme Court:

“The fact that President Bush has nominated Harriet Miers to the U.S. Supreme Court speaks well of her. The president has a history of nominating high quality conservative judges who refuse to legislate from the bench.

“While we do not yet know enough about her judicial philosophy, Ms. Miers has promised to help the courts to ‘strictly apply the laws and Constitution.’ We look forward to learning more about Ms. Miers’ judicial philosophy in the coming weeks. It remains to be seen if Ms. Miers fulfills President Bush’s campaign promise to appoint Supreme Court justices in the mold of Justices Scalia and Thomas. As President Reagan often said, ‘Trust but verify.’

“Regardless of Ms. Miers’ views on the courts, however, Senate Democrats must resist any urge to initiate an unconstitutional filibuster. Ms. Miers deserves an up-or-down vote.”
