Bush's ratings are very low at this point. He has stood very firm on issues like Iraq, appointment of Bolton to the UN (he circumvented the Senate) etc. And if he caves in here, he is finished politically. Forget about Jeb Bush having a shot at the Presidency. The extremists such as Billy Kristol etc. are even attacking Bush's family on talk shows calling Papa Bush and Mama Bush as liberal and not committed to Roe v, Wade, lower taxes etc. When it has come down to this, it tis Bush opportunity to keep these folks in a leash by leaving Meirs in and relying on the Dems to help him to control the extremists for the next 3 years. I am sure that you realize Bush does not have to depend on the extremists any more.
