I tend to use a utilitarian calculus, but I blend that with a POV that part of utilitarianism is protecting the underdog in any society, because that is one value the majority often forgets to value- until for some reason they are thrust in to an underdog position (at which point all people, regardless of political orientation, realize they should have valued it), but by that time it would be too late for them to protect the position.
