There's no cure or vaccination for H5N1 right now, and odds of surviving an infection are less than 50%. 60 of the 117 known cases have been fatal. First company to develop a vaccine would be a great stock to buy.

Folks here might not be worried about H5N1 right now but Europe sure is. It is on their doorstep and wild birds that have it are starting their annual migrations. If someone who has normal flu also gets H5N1 we are all in really deep trouble because that is a common interspecies mutation path.

The 1918-1919 Spanish Flu pandemic killed 50 million people. That's a drop in the bucket compared to what would happen in the current world environment. We have more trade, more travel, and a lot more people to spread the virus.
