I would second the comments of others that you should not focus on the software per se but on the relationships they have established with the major investment management companies worldwide. These guys have the best, longest relationships with the quantitaive managers and their services reflect that status. As you probably know, the company is named after Barr Rosenberg (the original founder), and the senior team are primarily either his former PhD students or are refugees from Wells Fargo, his first major client and one of the early adopters of quantitative techniques. If you include the predecessor reasearch done on NSF grants, they have been at this since around 1970, which gives them a position which is not going to be eroded any time soon.

They do provide software, but without their consulting side most of their clients would have a hard time using it-not just because the UI is clunky, but because some of the financial management concepts they enable are not well understood even by todays crop of MBA's. The software leverages the consulting opportunities, not the other way around, IMHO. Look at their individual backgrounds-all academics and fund management types, not software execs.
