Interferon-alpha can down-regulate what some refer to as a cytokine storm -- without interfering with non-specific NK cell response.

Cortico-steroids, such as Solumedrol, can immediately halt the cytokine storm as well -- but at the expense of turning off all immune response, which is not exactly what you're striving for under the circumstance of a H5N1 bird flu infection.

This chart shows the role of interferon-alpha in the early immune response.

The later T cell response, mediated by interleukin-2, can sometimes become overly aggressive. Interferon-alpha can push the response back to the initial and temporarily more effective response of suppression.
