Interferon-alpha can down-regulate what some refer to as a cytokine storm -- without interfering with non-specific NK cell response. Cortico-steroids, such as Solumedrol, can immediately halt the cytokine storm as well -- but at the expense of turning off all immune response, which is not exactly what you're striving for under the circumstance of a H5N1 bird flu infection.
