Re: Play a little mental, "Risk" and pretend your a foreign country that wants to invade the US - how would you do this in a successful manner? Our land borders are shared with Canada and Mexico. So, WHERE are the "invaders" going to come from?
Actually, they don't have to "come from" anywhere --they're there already! It's the so-called "enemy within" made up of all those minorities posing a (multi-)cultural challenge to the US's white, Judeo-Protestant elite... An opinion peddled by Samuel Huntington, Victor Davis Hanson and others. As I said(*), unlike Europe, the US isn't really "multicultural", it's a multiracial monoculture. Ethnic minorities are welcome so long as they pliantly conform to the Bible, the Flag and the Apple Pie and shed their native, alien trappings.... However, demographic trends and immigration patterns have changed: the bulk of would-be Americans come from non-white, non-Christian countries. A challenge compounded by the fact that the best and brightest (university graduates, PhDs, entrepreneurs) are no longer a white, European specialty. That is, it's no longer enough for the US to roll out the red carpet to German Jewish physicists and Russian engineers to keep the leading edge in science and technology....
In other words, ethnic minorities are welcome in the US so long as they remain such --and don't challenge the dominant (white, Judeo-Protestant) group. Ironically though, the US regions that are facing the most serious threat to the ideological status quo are the Bible-belt states! Too bad Mexico and Canada can't switch places, eh? It would put all the Latino pressure on the liberal, blue states and allow the crackers to mix up with fellow white Canucks.....
Europe, for her part, is facing the obverse challenge. It was never a big problem for most Europeans --be they French, German, Belgian, Dutch,...-- to get along with European immigrants speaking a different language, holding to a different worship,... Which is not to say that those newcomers were considered on a par with the natives (just ask the Gypsies, Jews,...). Yet the end result is that nowadays Europeans find it much less disturbing to live in a fragmented society made up of a dozen constituencies that all assert their respective heritages. Well, at least that's true for white, European minorities....
