read today that energy actually DETRACTS from the CPI--the core CPI, that is. not only is energy famously not included in the core, but the energy costs embedded in the largest core component (owner's equivalent rent) are additionally backed out.

so, the higher energy costs are, the LOWER the core CPI will be.
