The US is a meritocracy, for the better part. And we put alot of weight on credentials. Going to a top school is objective evidence of one's brights, and work ethic. If I'm going to hire someone (and I've been in the position of hiring people), I'm going to take that objective criterion over someone's assurances that they are intelligent (no, really! I promise!) anyday.

For us mere mortals that don't aspire to the top of the dog pile like the US Supreme Court, it doesn't matter nearly as much. And I would argue that it is just snobbery in that case. But that high bench isn't just any job, and we aren't looking for just any person to fill it.
