Mmm... maybe going into Iraq wasn't such a bad idea after all.

There is no question that the Afghan campaign was vital. The crazy Talib regime was controlled by al Qaeda. It would be laughable to pretend that we are trying to destroy their organization while they remained in control of a large country. Moreover, this helped induce Pakistan to take an aggressive anti-jihadist stance.

Iraq -- much more complex story. In the final analysis, if we succeed in suppressing al Qaeda, and help create a stable anti-jihadi government in Iraq... discredit and turn back the global tide of Islamic extremism.... then, it was a truly great idea.

If, otoh, in the end, al Qaeda will manage to take control of Iraq - and move on further -- in that case, it will have been a horrible idea.

The answer depends on who gets to write future history books.... ;)
