05-Oct-05 10:52 ET In Play Avici Systems -- An optical stock to keep on the radar (AVCI) 5.12 -0.12: The optical stocks were huge movers back in the Internet heyday, before being sold off aggressively, many into the low single digits. However, the space is starting to get noticed again. A name worth a look is Avici Systems, which makes routers for optical networks. Its IPO in July 2000 was among the most highly anticipated of that time.... In its recent Q2 report, the co reposted a loss, but more importantly posted sequential revenue growth of 9% and YTD revenue was up 17% yoy. Also, the co cut its Q2 non-GAAP loss per share and cash burn by roughly one third. Its non-GAAP loss per share of $0.32, beat consensus by $0.17 and revenue came in at $11.6 mln vs the $10.3 mln consensus. The balance sheet is solid with $62.3 mln in cash/inv, or $4.83 per share, which should help to limit downside. With a cash burn of roughly $4.5 mln/qtr, the co should be ok for a while... We also note that the stock has broke above a recent condolidation in the $4.50 area (roughly cash value). While we're not in love with it fundamentally given its lack of profitability, we thought we would put it on your radar. Mkt cap $68 mln, float 12.7 mln, avg vol 47K
