In my recent experience, the more overtly right wing a professor is, the more likely he(usually a he) is to be abusive towards students and other faculty. To be fair, this is restricted to a single department in a single university. Most of the professors avoid anything politically tinged as much as possible, but the ones who feel it is appropriate to drag politics into the classroom tend to be of the right wing variety. Which, on the face of it, is sort of strange. At the grad. level, most of the students in any given class aren't Americans...
