Speaking of stealing ideas

I'm split on this issue. The kid wrote DeCSS so he could watch his DVDs on his Linux computer, because DVD reader manufacturers wouldn't write Linux drivers for the decoder. He's no saint, don't get me wrong.

Copyright is balanced by fair use - a copyright holder's exclusive rights end at first sale. You can make copies for your own use. Technology companies increasingly want to extend their copyright privileges beyond the sale and essentially curtail fair use. Which is perfectly understandable given the nature of electronic works, but is pretty innovative as far as copyright law goes.

Adobe went this route with its e-book software. Once you purchase the e-book, you can't make electronic copies or print the e-book. Copying includes moving the file to another drive or computer. Which means if your hard drive goes up in smoke, so does your e-book "property". No backups. I think this goes too far.
