Why Righties Can't Teach

There might be a certain bias in academia but I also think its not a profession to which righties are drawn. It might be partly pay but I also think they don't have the kind of mindset that encourages the desire to teach. In my program, I did not see any bias during the interview process, including one that favored liberals over conservatives. However, what I did see was a type of person who was drawn to the profession of teaching. A person who typically was white, not concerned with personal wealth and has a strong desire to help others.

For an example, I did second interviews with 4 universities. In a second interview at one school, over a hundred fifty people were invited. I would say that I saw three or 4 persons of color in the audience. And that was true of every second interview I had. I don't think the schools I applied to when through the list of applicants and deleted the ones whom they suspected were people of color. Rather, I think teaching is not a profession that has great appeal for people of color for whatever reasons........a notion I consider very unfortunate. I think that's also true of conservatives.

In my cohort, there is one conservative out of 25. I don't think that was by intent; I think that number reflects the reality.
