I concur.. But I don't think it behooves our interests to wait the 20-30 years it may take for the people of this region to recognize that Islamic Totalitarianism is not all "it was cracked up to be"..

If they can't defeat AQ, they don't deserve the place. By removing ourselves, we make AQ "the invading foreigners".

The moderate portion of this country has been spiritually beaten down, or forced to relate where the law of the jungle pervades, not civilize behavior. It's to be expected when repressed/oppressed people suddenly find the opportunity for revenge against their former oppressors. And those oppressors will continue to lash out in hopes of continuing their previous intimidation of those they oppressed.

But the right way to do this is to mentor the Iraqi people. Teach and guide, but DO NOT make the decisions for them. Do not take ownership of their successes or failures. Only take credit for having created the atmosphere and environment for a democratic process to form and take root. They will find their own social and economic balance of power over time.

The key is to ensure that the common Iraqi has the political mechanism available to assert their will through the vote. This will ensure that ANY leaders will remain accountable and pressured to provide for the needs of their constituency, rather than focusing on their own ambitions.
