Some cities also set new records for warmest average September temperatures. . .

up here in the Frozen North, things aren't so frozen this autumn.

usually, by now, night temperatures are dipping below freezing
each night, the leaves on the trees have turned red and would
be beginning to fall, the vegetable garden would be pretty much
blasted by night after night of hard frosts -- in fact, it
would have been "done" by about Sept. 15th at the latest.
insects would pretty much be finished for the year, and the
migratory bird movements would have all but ended.

not this year. uh-uhn.

i just picked an egg plant in the garden yesterday and there
are still tomatoes ripening out there -- and i haven't even
bothered to cover the plants to protect them from the frost!
leaves on most trees are still green, although they are
turning yellow and falling off in the strong winds and
rains that we've had this week -- but more because they
seem to be worn out from a long summer of severe heat.
we had all of the windows on the house *wide open* 24 hours
a day until about 5 nights ago when it finally got too cool
and damp to leave them open. still only have a couple
of baseboard heaters on in on part of the house (that is nice).
still have ducks and geese flying back and forth over the
farm -- not bothering to migrate.
last week, i shot quite a lot of photos of butterflies
in my gardens -- still seeing the odd Monarch flying by
even as late as 5 or 6 days ago. crickets still chirping
at night and Spring peeper frogs still calling.
if it turns sunny again as it is supposed to this week,
i'm betting we see more butterflies and that i'll still
be seeing plenty of snakes and frogs when i go out in
the forest.

yep. i know. maybe this year is just a fluke. i've never
seen it go on warm like this -- steady without some
fluctuation -- ever. have seen warmish autumns and a
couple of years ago, we even did a 10 mile hike on
Nov. 26th in shorts and t-shirts when we should have
been in parkas and could never have hiked that trail
in running shoes.

climate change? you be the judge.
