You're purchasing a usage right to the intellectual property which is delivered on a physical medium. As with vinyl, where you could record a cassette tape to play in your car or to otherwise make a back-up copy for preservation, the same should apply to DVDs. As long as you're not selling or otherwise distributing it, the usage right of the IP for personal enjoyment is what you paid for. Transfer to HD is a legitimate preservation method.
