JohnC, I first joined in 1953, and out usual weapon was the M-1 Garand too. The officers, and top kick, were old vets, and took no guff off of anyone. We never got any new weapons, and didn't even have a couple of things we should have. We were a combat engineer company, and were supposed to have two tanks according to the manual, and in my last year, I was detailed to be a tank commander, but had to learn to drive with the levers, and pedals, on an APC. I think they got the one tank 2 years after I mustered out. I think it was a Sherman but am not sure.
