Socialist governments are mainly all of Europe and Canada, plus many others to varying degrees, including the US to a lesser degree. These are generally liberal governments. The reason they are socialist is that they will take care of their citizens basic needs from birth to death. The US also has some of those protections. Of course that means taxes pay for it. So you can't have low taxes and these services. It's either-or. These days, the GOP wants it both ways which is why we have tremendous deficits. corruption and war add to that.

The conservatives in this country are against socialism, though they don't mind taking advantage of it when they need it. They prefer corporations to own and run everything, as if we can trust corps more than elected government. Both forms are flawed but as we've seen again with the gas-gouging, after the S+L debacle plus all the corporate lobbyist money corrupting congress now, we cannot trust corporations enough to hand over our public wealth and systems to them. Ideally we could, but in reality they're in the profit business so they take advantage, espcially with corrupt leaders like Delay in charge.

Calling Hitler a socialist just because that word appears in his party's name is silly. Hitler was a fascist dictator of a racist military police state. In many ways the opposite of socialism.
