Hello Slagle, on <<cotton>>, it is now being sent in the other direction, with no necessity of gun boats, so we have progress.
On <<machine>>, the China-made machines in just about all categories cost between 30-50% of slightly better ones made elsewhere, and the control systems are improving quite rapidly. At that sort of discount, payback is that much faster, especially when paired with factory buildings similarly discounted etc.

I do not know, but suspect that folks are waiting for the conclusion of the drama in the sands of Mesopotamia, to see how it all works out in modern times.
Perhaps it is a case that folks must choose progress, without outside interference, and if they are not willing to make the sacrifice for progress, then they in effect are choosing "no progress", and will not work to maintain what is not precious.
