Fortunately I recently bought a supply of socks. :o) All the same color & style. I hate having to match those up after washing them.

I love this thread & read most of the posts, but seldom post on SI these days. IMHO most folks just simply miss the point & confuse supply & demand issues with the inflation/deflation argument.

My old Webster's dictionary had only one definition for inflation: An increase in the supply of money followed by an increase in the cost of goods & services. As long as the executive & legislative branches flood the economy with federal dollars (Iraq & Katrina), the Fed Reserve is obligated to offset their silliness with increased rates. Since the interest obligation of the federal government is a major component of the expense equation, what will that do to the federal deficit?

Maybe my old Webster's dictionary was wrong or we are in a new world, but I think not. It may even represent a "conundrum" (probably will go down in history as the greatest quote ever attributed to Greenie). Inflation represents the debasing of our currency by the federal government. Whatever the supply of other things (i.e., energy), the economy will adjust and go on. Alas, I do feel that the economy has not even approached reconciling this issue.

When I bought a home in 1981 my interest rate was 15 5/8. What will that do to the housing market? While history doesn't exactly repeat, it does seem to get close.

Just MHO & FWIW
