In terms of high level basic science, China is nowhere now, most of the "highly cited scientists" in China are in HK. 2 in the mainland, against thousands in the US in the ISI database. Catching up technologically is one thing - and the Chinese economy as a whole is nowhere near that. Overtaking on basic science would come later. Perhaps much later. If ever.... to be blunt I don't really see it in the students who come tot he US to study. Many are very smart but.... All of that of course depends on Kurzweil being wrong, which every economist assumes is the case, pretty much.
