Well, it makes sense. HP competes in 100% of the market, while Dell is limited to the < 85% (and dropping) segment that is supplied with INTC CPUs.

Dell has no 64 bit notebooks (other than 8lb behemoths)

Dell's PC's, and especially Dell's servers are a lot less efficient than HP's servers and PC's.

It's a tribute to Dell's marketing machine that they did as well as they did, given the limitations they operate under.

The problem for Dell is that the minute they sell a single computer into the one of the segments Intel has barred them from, Dell's total corporate profits drop by between 30% and 70% - hundreds of millions of dollars - as they lose the discounts they get on every INTC system sold.
