A split means nothing as far as money goes. From your example, if you had 200/sh at $95, you/anyone would have 400 shares at $47.50. Couple things they tend to do (1) Improve morale, because some people love the sounds of a "split" (2) Make the stock price more affordable for small investors.
But, it takes Big Money (Mutual/Hedge Funds) to move AMAT, IMO, and they are looking at PE's, ROE's, PSR's etc. and Business Conditions for the semi-equips in general. So in this way, a split doesn't mean much, I would think.
But, hey, splitting sounds just fine to me. ;-)
