GPS THEORY....How he could beat it "Posted Apr 7, 2005, 1:37 PM ET by random
This is Not a GPS device.

Like nearly every "GPS" tracking device featured on Endaget over the past year, this thing uses the cell phone networks to triangulate position.

This tracker has absolutely nothing to do with GPS, but in this case that's a good thing. A GPS tracking device would need a view of the sky to function. That would be a massive downside for a criminal tracking device. A prisoner with a real GPS tracking device could just wrap it in a towel or wear long pants to defeat it.

Because these devices use the cell phone networks, they are hardly perfect. A prisoner could wrap the device in aluminum foil and it would be rendered useless or buy a cell phone jammer.
