Everyone,
I am not a stockholder, I tune in to this discussion because I have a business and educational investment in Apple, and I love my Mac. I very, very much want Apple to survive.
I have $6000 bucks sunk into hardware etc. Which devalues rapidly no matter what happens. I'm a student, in debt, with 1.25 years to go to get my degree and when I get out I'll need the best computer I can buy to compete.
If neither Motorola nor IBM agrees to support funding and research into the PPC chip line then I will forgo any new purchases of hardware or software until it becomes clear what chips Apple will use. I can't afford to get stuck buying obsolete equipment.
Half of my faith in Apple lies in the easy to use innovative software, although it has lost an edge lately (stability, multitasking), I am still hoping Rhapsody will be a key. The other half of my faith lies in the better, faster chips. I honestly thought the CHRP thing would be cleared up and both Apple and MOT would offer CHRP machines. Maybe it is a power play on MOTs part, but if it is, they win.
Look at the new Macs, 350Mgz but a slow 50Mgz buss, with slow hard drives. OK I could even accept that. I figured I'd wait until next year for the 450Mgz model with 80Mgz buss and dump the hard drive for a raid array. I don't even want a CHRP machine, even if it is faster, because I worry about bugs, and without Windows NT support it is of no use to me. But now I'm wondering if Apple will migrate to Intel chips. If they migrate to Intel, why would I buy an Apple machine? Can anyone honestly state, that if they were I, they would go into debt for an Apple machine and numerous periferals at this time?
I think almost all Mac users will have second thoughts about upgrades until this chip thing is clear.
So far no one has offered who will manufacture PPC chips.
I hope JOBS reads this.
