Indeed, just as it was unthinkable for most of Europe's conservative bourgeoisie to coopt the unruly, uneducated, working classes into their political decision-making, today it's not yet conceivable for Europe's middle- and upper-middle-classes to extend the sociopolitical franchise to their non-white minorities. The bad news, of course, is that it took the WWI bloodbath for Europe's ruling classes to grant the proletariat the so-called universal suffrage --and yet, only to adult males... Women had to wait until after 1945. Let's hope it will not take another cataclysmic bloodshed for Europe to stretch the political and labor franchises to her non-white constituencies.... Gus
