According to Marx, socialism was a step on the way to communism

I'm not familiar with Marx in detail. Perhaps you could share some of his writings on the subject. I have always learned that the difference between socialism and communism is whether there is private property or only collective ownership. That's really a major difference.

This is confused by the fact that all communist examples have also been dictatorships with the possible exception of some Israeli Kibbutzim.
