The bad news, of course, is that it took the WWI bloodbath for Europe's ruling classes to grant the proletariat the so-called universal suffrage --and yet, only to adult males... Women had to wait until after 1945. Let's hope it will not take another cataclysmic bloodshed for Europe to stretch the political and labor franchises to her non-white constituencies....

Your kidding. Women did not get the vote in Europe til 1945?

Re. your comment that Europe is "a true multicultural white monolith".......it seems to me that statement is nothing more than an oxymoron.

As for multicultural, when the US was in the state of multiculturalism roughly 50 or more years ago, what that meant was that each group had its own culture, its own icons and its own facilities, and no one ever crossed the line between cultures. Now if Europe thinks that's the ideal, then they are very much in sync with an older America........one that Americans don't particularly think is desirable........because in truth, multicultural works very well for the upper class elite: out of sight out of mind..........and rarely for anyone eles. I've seen the barrios of Paris, of Berlin, of Marseilles, of London. They have exploded in the past and they will explode in the future.

At least the US acknowledges that it must integrate and everyone must be truly equal while Europe hides behind the mask of multiculturalism that covers a multitude of sins.
