I should have guessed that the Economist was the place you were obtaining so much of this misinformation.

I've always been amused by their, "we're right of course and why can't everyone else be so sensible" attitude as they proceed to completely misinterpret one situation after another.

I've always envisioned the staff of the Economist reporting on the world from the library of an old Men's Club somewhere in the City. Their reporting has long reflected their opinion that knowledge of the facts merely distract you from your original prejudice and thus interfere with your final judgment.

Companies like GM died a long time ago, continuing to believe that people would buy what ever products they bother to dish up, giving them the assurance that research and development to keep up with or exceed competitors efforts was not necessary, since those other cars were made by "funny little foreigners" who could not possibly be a threat.

Its ironic how nearly identical the cultures of GM and the Economist are. Both self-justified, driven by prejudice rather than fact and completely out of touch with reality.
