Everything is quite different in Switzerland.

The Parliament drafts laws which are voted on once a year by all citizens in a direct vote.

Prior to the vote every place where people meet is peppered with discussions and arguments over the merits of the various laws. Formal public discussions are held on most of the proposed laws. No where else in the world have I seen citizens so passionately involved in the issues before them.

In a country the size of Switzerland with 7.5 million people (only twice the population of Los Angeles, but broken down into 23 different Cantonal governments), newspapers sometimes pale in information content to what you hear from your neighbors, co-workers, internet postings and other informal news sources.

I'm convinced that size goes hand in hand with alienation.
