"Don't agree at all! We had a really interesting week in that area a couple of years ago (in the Fall), and got a great deal out of two days "on site" in Fort McMurray. Make a point of having a detailed look at the environmental reclaim work Syncrude is doing, and it's pretty encouraging. I also recommend at least a picnic at Lesser Slave Lake provincial park on the way back. I do agree about Banff and Jasper, and the icefields, though. The Frank Slide site was sobering. Lovely country. Lots to see and do."

Well, I'm a bit of a granola. I believe in conservation of our environment and resources. When I was young and went for hikes out in the National Parks and Forests, I was appalled by the checkerboard landscape created by the loggers. Replacing trees in neat little rows is a nice effort but not good for the ecosystem.

I haven't seen the oilsands in person (been through coal-mining country, though), but I'm sure that I wouldn't feel that good. That area will never be the same. And with high oil prices, the destruction is growing. For me, from an emotional standpoint, ingnorance is bliss. I don't drive a Prius yet, and I'm not ready to. And I'm long COS.

For Commander C, he has become the resident, BBR flag bearer. He needs some intellectual stimulation since he's retired, he should definitely go. Me? I'd just end up crying like that Indian in those '70's anti-litter ads.
