Hello W.R.,
Your data is certainly convincing. There is, however, a new factor on the scene, namely ethanol. At least in the tropics unsubsidized ethanol is cheaper than oil(Brent $59). Is it feasible for tropical countries to trade with the temperate countries, ethanol for food? If so is the energy crisis postponed for a few decades? I don't know the answer to this. It seems, that with the possible exception of India and China, there is lots of unused agricultural land in the world. It is also a demonstrable fact that intensified research produces better strains of crops and higher yields per hectare. Not indefinitely of course, but for a long time.
