The point Andy is missing is the 2008 Olympics. Having spent sometime in Asia as a young marine, I learned that "disgrace and saving face" is extremely relevant in Asian culture. In 2008 the Chinese are officially unveiling their country to the world. A sort of "coming out" ceremony. Until then China will go full bore to make the country as modern and spectacular as possible. JMHO
