Well, I guess I don't know what you mean by flat out wrong except in someone's opinion. I can see interpreting loosely, or, faced with societal changes that could never have been envisioned in the 18c., coming up with decisions which could have gone in different directions. But i don't see how they can be flat out wrong since they ARE the ones to whom the decision falls. But perhaps I don't understand (hey, I'm a psych and music major- I just struggle along here)

I had read that the coach was leading and initiating the prayers. Here is one article that says this-- it may have turned out to be inaccurate, though I believe even praying WITH violates the neutral position mandated.

cbsnews.com

(AP) A veteran central New Jersey high school football coach has resigned after being told by school officials he could no longer lead his team in pregame prayer.

I agree with your final paragraph about insensitivity. For too long though, we haven't been sensitive enough, and we pay the price now (to a point I consider gouging). LIndy's article about the tiny crosses had some really great example of the extremes. When we tell children they can't read at recess, or draw a picture of Jesus, we've gone way too far the other way.
It's too bad that we couldn't have solved the dilemma short of taking it to the SC, but common sense and tolerance often seems to be in short supply.
