Jim,

Ketchikan is crammed on a narrow ledge between the mountains and the sea. The airport is located across Tongass Narrows on Gravina Island because the terrain there is much less rugged. The purpose of the bridge is to improve access to the airport and to open up more land for development. Here's a topgraphic map of the Ketchikan area if you want to take a closer look...

The people who claim the bridge is "for only 50 people" or that it's a "bridge to nowhere" are just trying to be inflammatory in order to get attention. But these claims are not true and they should not be allowed to stand.

I believe that attacking individual projects like this will NEVER solve the pork problem. The system is broken, and I think the only way to fix it is to require a much higher percentage of state/local matching money for federal money. That would force state and local governments to be much more careful about their spending priorities.

IMO, the Ketchikan bridge is major overkill. I've ridden the Gravina Island ferry several times, and it seemed perfectly adequate to me.
