Hope this post is appropriate for this board - it pertains to the Fitzgerald investigation which looks set to issue indictments to Bush administration officials this week.

Bush at Bay: Fitzgerald Looks at Niger Forgeries
By Martin Walker UPI Monday 24 October 2005

Gotta love the line: "At this point, the facts start dribbling away into conspiracy theories that involve membership of shadowy Masonic lodges, Iranian go-betweens, right-wing cabals inside Italian Intelligence and so on. It is not yet known how far Fitzgerald, in his two years of inquiries, has fished in these murky waters."

I swear anytime I hear the mainstream media use the term "conspiracy theory", I immediately substitute the word "deep politics" and sense there is a legitimate angle of inquiry and investigation that is being discredited ...

... but "dribbling conspiracy theory involving Italian Intelligence and 'shadowy' Masonic lodges" is truly priceless. What the article doesn't go onto discuss is that Masonic lodges have an extremely bad track record in Italy, which led to the banning of secret societies in Italy in the 1980's. This on the back of the revelation that the Masonic lodge, Propaganda Due (or P2), had enganged in extremely criminal activities, and a list of members was found in an Italian safe which showed membership of an extrordinary sampling of the "high-elite" of Italian society - including elements of the Mafia, the Media, high-level Italian politicians, and the Vatican - in P2. The leader of this Masonic lodge was the crime figure and Lodge Grand Master Licio Gelli, who was intimately linked to Mafioso Michele Sindora, the American-born head of the Vatican Bank Paul Marcinkus, and the Vatican-entangled collapse of the Milan-based Banco Ambrosiano. The head of Banco Ambrosiano, Roberto Calvi, was later to found "suicided", hanging from the Blackfriars Bridge in the City of London in a crime scene replete with Masonic symbolism.

BTW, the Vatican Bank scandal, and the involvement of Bishop Marcinkus, Gelli, and Calvi in the death of Pope John Paul II in 1978 is wonderfully explored in David Yallop's "In God's Name - an Investigation into the Murder of Pope John Paul I".

Interesting, Rome prosecutors, as a result of ongoing efforts by Calvi's family, reopened the Calvi case in 2002 after ruling out suicide. For more information on this fascinating situation, see the link below:

... Anyway, don't want to engage in anymore "dribbling, murky, shadowy" conspiracy theories, so I'll just conveniently put away the facts, and leave it to the mainstream media to spin the story however they see fit.
