Actually, Intel doesn't have anything in the high end either. If they did, Dell would be selling them.

But HP makes a high end platform that uses Itanium parts, as does SGI.

In the time frame of that delay/cancellation the (rather unfortunately named) Horus platform will be coming out for Opteron and is expected to be available from 1 or more tier 1 vendors.

Which is why those guys see this as both relevant to Intel and not good news for Intel.

It's not a disaster, but it matters.

The real issue for Intel is that AMD has two additional FABs coming on line next year, one in Q1 and another in Q3.

Now, just when volume production from those FABs will appear at retail is yet to be seen, but AMD is being quite conservative about what they'll be producing in those new FABs, so production could ramp pretty quickly.

AMD has taken 20% of the market with a single 8 inch FAB. During the next year AMD will be adding two 12 inch FABs to that current, single, 8 inch FAB.

And that could be an issue for Intel.

So you're probably right to not sweat the Itanium news.

It kind of reminds me of George Carlin's famous bit about the hippy dippy weatherman where he says something along the lines of;

"The weather radar's picking up a line of thunderstorms from north southwest of Abilene to south northwest of DuMoines, but it's also picking up a flight of Russian ICBM's coming in over the pole so I wouldn't sweat the thunderstorms."
