You're being a little hard on Nascar. At the very least it teaches people how to cheer together, and the enjoyment of victory, and the agony of defeat - and all those other things you get watching any kind of race, be it a horse race, or a dog race, or a human race. All of the spectator "sports" involve sitting on one's ass :-) I wouldn't enjoy Nascar myself, and I deplore the waste of fuel - now THAT seems stupid to me, to celebrate the burning of fossil fuels, not because it is a huge amount, but because of the symbolic waste, but other than that, I don't find it stupider than any other spectator activity that has no cultural literacy component.

(Only certain movies teach us anything- I don't think movies like Nightmare On Elm Street part 6 teach us much- and I hate enabling violent pathways in the brain [since research is indicating that seeing lights up the same pathways as doing]- so on balance, I'd rather have people watch Nascar than watch violence.)
