I disagree. X86 is not an open standard. With whom (what standards body) did Intel consult before adding the MMX instructions?

IMHO, what little openness there is to X86 has come as the result of (1) some ancient licensing agreements that Intel was pushed into by its customers, who feared sole-source parts, and (2) reverse engineering.

How open is the Pentium II connection scheme?
