If we didn't have a political culture of instant attack ads whenever a candidate strays from the straight and narrow, maybe someone could start a debate on the merits of decriminalizing marijuana and putting all the resources saved there into the crack, heroin and meth epidemics that do the real damage.

But that is an idea whose time probably hasn't come yet, despite millions of Americans flaunting the "law" every day without concern.
