Hi John,
re: 'I still have reservations about installation though. Perhaps with HDMI things get a little bit easier, although I don't know about that simple install manual. Throw in video scaling, moving the picture size around depending on ratio, and it can get a bit confusing. I read that the big box retailers are notorious for turning the contrast and brightness way up.'
The big retailers also turn up the volume and bass to near distorted levels in the audio, and especially car audio demonstrations. This, unfortunately is what sells. I have a pretty high end, strictly audio system.....my friends are all well educated and smart....try to talk to them about clarity and imaging and palatable sound. They want loud with lots of bass. With regard to tv's, most just want plasma or LCD because it'll fit in well with living room furniture, looks cool, and can be very large!! Show most a poorly performing monitor and they'll only notice the size and exterior looks. Try to get the average best buy tv purchaser to even know where to set contract, color and sharpness, and then ask them to define what makes a set HDTV (ready). Throw in terms like composite, S-video etc...and you'll have most salespeople stumped !! I think size and looks is what matters. Most importantly is also price. I love the way (at least during the baseball division series) Dell had a "Dell defining moment" I thought it was a great way to advertise the fact that they make TV's. I believe they'll be a force to be reckoned with! Like you said, it'll be fun to watch how things play out!
