ADT's mass notification system uses Neo-Planar (by ATCO) directional speakers

ADT Security Services Inc. has introduced its entry into the growing mass notification market with a system that boasts about the high “intelligibility” rating it achieves by relying on four speakers that use “Neo-Planar” technology from American Technology Corp., of San Diego, CA, which it says can minimize the dispersion of sound waves and, thus, reduce distortion and noise pollution.

The four vertical speakers are mounted on a 30-foot retractable voice communication tower, which can also carry video surveillance cameras to allow remote monitors to see crowds and provide more accurate verbal directions to them.

“Emergencies such as the tsunami in Southeast Asia, the hurricanes along the Gulf coast and recent terrorist attacks throughout the world remind us that disasters strike without warning and can cause massive loss of life and destruction of property,” said Paul Brisgone, director of ADT’s federal systems division.

The ADT system was used during July 4th festivities at the National Mall in Washington, DC and has been installed at 14 different U.S. Army bases, Brisgone told GSN.

He maintains that the advanced speaker system is superior to those offered by competing mass notification systems. “They’re using traditional speakers that blow out the sound,” sais Brisgone. “Ours are very directional.”

The typical ADT mass notification system, which can provide voice messages in multiple languages and accommodates both live and pre-recorded messages, costs approximately $70,000, said Brisgone.

Using any or all of the four speakers, the system can electronically “tailor” the emitted sound to fit the geographic area of the intended audience, notes a briefing paper issued by ADT, based in Boca Raton, FL “The Neo-Planar [speaker] produces approximately 80db of intelligible voice at 400 meters and has received the highest ‘intelligibility’ rating on the market today by an independent certified acoustics lab,” said the ADT presentation.

Good to see an independent certified acoustics lab attesting to quality of the NeoPlanars, and giving them the highest ranking of intelligibility.
Even better to see that ADT is out there selling them.

"installed at 14 different U.S. Army bases" gives one pause to consider the number of units per base, as some of those bases cover quite a few acres.
