As I remember it being taught, the British troops were accused of stealing things out of the house and always ate the best portions of food. They were often accused of taking liberties with the children too. These may have been rumors, but there were enough to keep the families nervous.

I think there were a lot of things taught that weren't exactly true to the historical events and/or viewed with a biased perspective. Was the Boston Tea Party anything other than an act of non-lethal terrorism? What would happen today if a bunch of citizens [disguised as ... Hispanics!] torched up Canadian soft lumber when it crossed the border into the US? Would we all jump up and declare it an act of patriotism? A protest against oppression?
