Smeared by Media Matters

By Jacob Laksin on Uncategorized

The other night I appeared on Bill O’Reilly’s television program to discuss the slavishly pro-Democratic smear site, Media Matters. Evidently Media Matters’ command central was so impressed with my performance that they’ve ordered one of their collegiate interns to put together a brief summary of my sundry thought crimes. They are as follows:

As a columnist for David Horowitz’s FrontPageMag.com, the online publication of the Horowitz-led Center for the Study of Popular Culture, Laksin has some experience with smearing. For example, Laksin lambasted filmmaker Michael Moore in a 2004 column as "Hezbollah’s Hollywood Hero." More recently, in a July 27 column appearing shortly after John G. Roberts Jr.’s nomination to the Supreme Court, Laksin berated what he called "The Hate America, Hate-Roberts Left." Laksin bashed Media Matters in an August 29 article, calling us "a clearinghouse for leftwing outrage," and attacked Brock as a "Media Liar" in a September 21 column. Both articles also appear in Horowitz’s DiscovertheNetworks.org database, which bills itself as a "guide to the political left."

I will be generous and submit that my detractors didn’t trouble to read most of the articles they cite, since my “smearing” of Michael Moore amounts to little more than pointing out that the bloated bloviator’s propaganda vehicle, Fahrenheit 9-11, found an enthusiastic audience among the terrorist group Hezbollah. That’s just a fact. But then I doubt the self-styled conservative media watchdog is interested in challenging me on the facts. The second article, meanwhile, traces an actual smear campaign—the one recently waged against Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts by a bevy of far-left interest groups.

That Media Matters would take reflexive umbrage at either one of these articles is as good an insight as any into its fringe political sympathies, while its insistence on denouncing dissenting opinions as smears is a revealing illustration of its contempt for free debate. Its one reason I called it a “clearing house for leftwing outrage,” and I am in debt to Media Matters for reproducing it on their site; it is gratifying to have one’s opinions confirmed so vividly.
