Senate Approves $8 Billion for Bird Flu Plan

foxnews.com

. . . . Lawmakers said the money will fund a White House readiness plan that is expected to be announced soon. . . . More than $1 billion was also earmarked for enhanced disease SURVEILLANCE capabilities and public health preparedness.

Caren Mason mentioned in Quidel’s conference call that Quidel has identified to the government five uses for Quidel’s rapid flu test:

- traveler SURVEILLANCE

- front-line regional SURVEILLANCE

- distinguishing actual flu from other flu like illness

- RAPID identification of persons most in need of antiviral medication.

- aid to managing fear

In reply to questions related to discussions with the government and as to whether Quidel’s being heard, the answer was: “I think some of the answers are going to come forth when this plan is released and . . . . We know they are hearing us. What they expect to do with the information that we are conveying to them, we do not know.”

In reply to a question concerning Quidel’s ability to manufacture large orders for flu tests, Caron said: “We have been working for several months on the manufacturing plan associated with several scenarios and we are confident we can meet the demand.”

A billion is a lot of money, and I’m betting some of it WILL be spent for rapid flu tests for the five uses Caren identified, above.

And when the President’s “Bird Flu Plan” is released next week, we may get some real solid info concerning the support the government will provide for the utilization of rapid flu tests. If it’s obviously a lot, Quidel’s heading way up.
