To learn more about Java ... try this URL:

java.sun.com

There is (maybe was now ?!?!) an excellent tutorial from MINDQ on creating Java applets ... it is still listed in WWW.DOWNLOAD.COM and in ZDNET's shareware library ... but the download is a pointer to WWW.MINDQ.COM ... and the FTP request will be refused ... MINDQ does however still support their J++ demo (MicroSoft's version of Java) ... I wonder if they got 'persuaded' in some way or another? If you manage to get one of the copies ... IBM gave away 10,000 copies of this tutorial on a CDROM a few months ago ... some vendors are now selling copies of this CDROM (USA FLEX ... for $2, I think look in Computer Shopper Ads) it is worth taking the time to use the CDROM version instead of the 'free download'.

The basic issue of Java boils down to MicroSoft's vision Vs Sun's vision ... MSFT wants to make Java into 'just another programming language for Windows platforms', while the Sun vision provides for the Java Virtual Machine which enables the 'write once, run anywhere' capability of Java applications to run on ALL platforms ... IBM and Intel are both supporters of the JVM initative from Sun.

I'm looking into Java a bit more now ... you can also download IBM's Visual Age for Java (complete development environment) free ... start at this URL:

software.ibm.com

You can just read about it, or download a copy & try it for yourself.

Have fun ... it can take lots of time if you want to dig in and really understand Java.
