The Swedish-American Institute in Minneapolis is located in a turn of the last century mansion built by a Swedish immigrant who made a bundle publishing a Swedish language newspaper. When I toured it with a group some years ago the guide explained why it was located where it was and not in one of the more fashionable parts of town. Said the builder was not allowed to build there since immigrants, even rich ones were not allowed into that part of town. An audible gasp rose from the group. No one was aware that there was a time when Scandinavians were subjected to base discrimination in Mpls. They were not aware that the town was founded by Anglo-Yankees from the North East who looked down at the newcomers as worthy of nothing but unskilled labor.

Things change but nothing really changes.
