I heard some new & upbeat stuff from Novell on Wednesday, also met Scott Lemon ... he was doing a 'dog & pony' show mostly about BorderManager.

A Novell Canada guy introduced a 6 hour seminar that I attended a couple of days ago ... said some things about how well they've been doing recently ... he used some better numbers than I have heard in the past ... says that Novell has 73 Million users and 'shipped' (he didn't say sold) 500,000 severs during the first half of '97 ... contrasted that against Sun (shipped about 14,000 servers for FY 96).

He went on to say that a new marketing push is about to start, and that Novell will 'outmarket it's competition' ... I believe that the start date is the Sept 17 kick off that Elmo and others have mentioned.

I'm going to 3 more Novell seminars in the next 3 weeks, and expect to get a copy of BorderManager, and the most recent Developer's package some time next month ... decided to let my MSDN membership lapse and will switch the attention, effort, and $ to Novell/SUN for now.

I still think that 4Q97 will not be very good ... but, expect that what is really happening is that the 'new team' is setting the performance targets for fiscal '98 ... which will be the first year they really are accountable for the results ... they will probably want to keep '97 'flat' then look much better in '98.

PS ... Scott did a pretty good job of making BorderManager look real good ... almost felt sorry for the poor slobs that have to deal with NT Server ... alas, there was only a little less than 200 people in the room, the message needs to get out to many millions still!
