Family Of Four Dies From Carbon Monoxide
Police say appears to be murder-suicide

(CBS) NEW YORK A family of four was found dead inside their Morningside Heights apartment on Thursday night, after succumbing to carbon monoxide. Police say the deaths appear to be a possible murder/suicide.

The family has been identified as Fred Wang, 42, his wife Christine, 43, their 11-year-old son Dennis and 8-year-old daughter Serena. The news was terribly disturbing to neighbor Conchita Gonzales. "There is a family that committed suicide. And I'm very shocked because I knew them." Gonzales said. "They were a very nice family."

Police say Fred Wang had written a letter to a relative in Taiwan saying he was depressed about a failed financial venture. Christine Wang's cousin living in New Jersey had received word about the letter and went to the Wang's second floor apartment at Morningside Gardens housing complex on West 123rd Street around 7 Thursday night. But she was too late. Police say the cousin entered the apartment and smelled a foul odor. She found a grandmother alive in one bedroom. But investigators say the cousin could not get into the second bedroom so she called 911.

Police and fire fighters made their way in the bedroom. Inside police say they found the father dead on the ground and the lifeless mother and children huddled together. Investigators say someone had burned 6 pots of charcoal on a metal burner. The room was tightly sealed and a blanket covered the bedroom door.

Police say the family may have been dead for as many as 3 days. The grandmother was taken to St. Luke's hospital, but was not affected by the fumes.
